Conservation of Mass Quiz 1/23

All questions require written responses.

Explain open and closed systems and give an example of each.

Explain the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Explain why the mass was not the same during the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar even though it was supposed to be a closed system.

Using the following chemical reaction, be able to discuss the number of each type of element and whether it demonstrates the Law of Conservation of Mass.

Baking soda      +      vinegar                  Sodium acetate        +      water        +         carbon dioxide

NaHCO₃             +      CH₃COOH                NaOOCCH₃              +        H₂O         +                 CO₂

Mystery powder lab

Make a title page  "Mystery Powder Lab", a picture colored, name, date, group

Attach in this order:  Title page, data table (station 1 toward front), Analysis (question 1 toward front) and rubric.

Powder Properties information:
Salt:  does not react with vinegar or iodine, has a crystal shape, less soluble than sugar.

Sugar:  does not react with vinegar, crystal shape, very soluble in water, dissolves in vinegar, truns brown when heated.

Baking Soda:  Reacts with vinegar(produces a gas), does not react with iodine, does not have a crystal shape, slightly soluble in water.

Corn Starch:  reacts with iodine, does not react with vinegar (gets thick, then hard), no crystal shape, insouble in water

Plaster of Paris:  Reacts with vinegar (produces a gas), turned grey with water, reacts with iodine(turned lighter brown), has not crystal shape, melts-then hardens in water and vinegar.
